Your Enterprise Software Is About to Start Doing Its Own Work

For two decades, enterprise software had a simple job description. Store the record, display the record, and let a person decide what to do next. The person was the worker, and the software was the filing system. That arrangement is wobbling, and the reason is agentic AI: systems that can read a request, plan a sequence of actions across applications, and carry them out.

From Systems of Record to Systems of Action

Analysts increasingly describe a shift from systems of record to systems of action. An expense platform does not just store receipts. It notices a missing invoice, requests it from the vendor, matches it against the purchase order, and escalates only the exceptions. A customer service platform does not just log tickets. It resolves the routine ones and hands the difficult ones to a specialist with a summary already written.

Momentum is real. A 2026 survey of 500 senior executives at large enterprises, published by the agent platform company CrewAI, found that every respondent planned to expand agentic AI use this year, and that organizations had automated about 31 percent of their workflows on average. Because the survey came from a vendor with a commercial stake, treat the numbers as directional. A separate May 2026 survey of 621 digital leaders by Contentstack found that 58 percent had agentic programs running in production, while 41 percent worried their organization was falling behind competitors.

That worry, more than any single statistic, explains the rush.

The Hard Parts Are Not the Model

Building an agent that drafts a good email is no longer the difficult part. The difficult parts are plumbing and trust. Agents need credentials, and those credentials need scoped permissions that match what a human in the same role would be allowed to do. They need audit trails, because when an agent updates a supplier record incorrectly, someone must be able to find out why. Many enterprises are discovering they have no reliable inventory of non-human identities, and that their access tools were designed for people logging in at desks.

Observability is another gap. Traditional monitoring tells you whether a service responded. Agent monitoring has to tell you whether the outcome was right, which requires evaluation datasets, sampling, and human review of edge cases. Uptime and latency metrics will not catch a confident wrong answer.

Take a procurement agent that approves routine purchases under a set dollar threshold. Its uptime can be perfect while it quietly approves duplicate orders from a vendor whose invoice format changed. Only a review process that samples approvals and checks them against outcomes will catch that pattern, and only an audit trail will show when it started.

What an Enterprise App Development Company Should Change

For an Enterprise app development company, this shift changes the architecture conversation. Three design choices stand out.

First, separate the reasoning layer from the action layer. Let the agent propose, and let well-defined tools execute, with each tool enforcing its own business rules. An agent that can only call approved functions is far easier to govern than one with broad database access.

Second, design for handoffs. The most valuable moment in an agentic workflow is often the transition from automation to human judgment. A good handoff includes what the agent tried, what it found, what it recommends, and where it is unsure. Teams that skip this step end up with users who learn to distrust the system.

Third, measure outcomes in business terms. Cycle time, error rate after human review, and cost per resolved case tell you far more than how many tokens a workflow consumed.

The same logic applies to hospital systems deploying agents across billing and staffing. A Healthcare app development company selling into large health networks is effectively an enterprise vendor now, with procurement reviews, security audits, and integration demands to match.

What to Watch Next

Expect the next wave of enterprise tooling to focus on identity and permissions for agents. Vendors that can show a clear record of what an agent did, under whose authority, and with what result will have an advantage in procurement. Standards for describing agent capabilities and limits will likely follow, much as API documentation standards did a decade ago.

The Question Behind the Question

Ask a vendor whether their product uses agents and you will hear yes. Ask what those agents are allowed to do without approval, who reviews their mistakes, and how their access is revoked when a project ends, and the conversation gets more revealing. Those second questions are where the real competitive differences will show up over the next few years.
