For years, conversations around periods in India focused mainly on breaking silence and improving basic access to sanitary products. That work still matters enormously but there's a newer, equally urgent conversation that deserves attention: what happens to all that material afterward, and whether the products themselves are sustainable at all. 

What Is Sustainable Menstruation? 

What is sustainable menstruation as a concept goes beyond simply having access to pads or products. It asks a bigger question: can menstrual practices be maintained in a way that doesn't harm the environment, doesn't create unmanageable waste, and remains affordable and accessible over the long term? 

Conventional disposable sanitary pads, while a major improvement over unsafe alternatives, are largely made of plastic and take hundreds of years to decompose. In India, where waste management infrastructure is already stretched thin in many areas, this creates a growing environmental burden that often goes unnoticed in mainstream conversations about periods. 

Why Menstrual Hygiene Management Needs a Broader Lens 

Menstrual hygiene management has traditionally focused on three things: access to products, access to private and clean sanitation facilities, and awareness to break stigma. These remain essential. But a complete approach also needs to consider:

Rethinking Menstrual Hygiene Programmes 

A well-designed menstrual hygiene programme today needs to do more than distribute pads. It needs to educate on the full pictureintroducing reusable and biodegradable alternatives alongside conventional products, and giving communities the information to choose what works best for their circumstances. 

Reusable and Eco-Friendly Alternatives 

Options like reusable cloth pads, menstrual cups, and biodegradable pads are gaining ground as sustainable alternatives. Reusable cloth pads, when made and used correctly, can last for months or years, significantly reducing both cost and waste over time. Menstrual cups, though requiring an upfront investment and a learning curve, can last several years with proper care. 

These aren't presented as replacements that everyone must adopt overnight. Awareness, comfort, and choice matter the goal is informed decision-making, not imposing a single "correct" method. 

Safe Disposal Systems 

Even where disposable products remain in use, proper disposal infrastructure — like incinerators in schools or community-level waste segregation — reduces environmental harm significantly. Many hygiene programmes now pair product distribution with basic waste management education, closing a gap that was previously overlooked.
