Specialty Coffee Culture Continues to Grow Across the United States
Coffee continues to play an important role in everyday life across the United States. New data from the National Coffee Association shows that 66% of American adults reported drinking coffee on the previous day in 2026. Specialty coffee has also reached a record level, with 48% of adults reporting that they had consumed specialty coffee.
Coffee shops have become more than places to grab a quick drink. Many Americans visit cafés to work, meet friends, study, or take a break from their daily routines. Espresso-based drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas remain especially popular, with espresso-based consumption also reaching a record level in the latest survey.
The rise in out-of-home coffee consumption is another notable trend. According to the National Coffee Association, 38% of past-day coffee drinkers had coffee outside the home, reaching its highest level since January 2020.
As the fall season arrives, cooler mornings can make a trip to a local coffee shop even more appealing. People heading out early may choose comfortable layers for the changing temperatures. A woolen jacket can be a practical option for a morning coffee run, especially when the weather feels cooler outside.
Coffee culture also supports local businesses and creates spaces where communities can connect. Independent cafés, specialty coffee shops, and larger chains all contribute to the growing variety of coffee experiences available to American consumers.
With specialty coffee reaching new levels of popularity, cafés and coffee traditions are likely to remain an important part of everyday American life throughout the fall season and beyond.
