TurboTax 2026 Pricing: Every Plan Compared (Free to Premium)
Here's the thing about TurboTax pricing. The number you see on the homepage is almost never the number you pay at checkout.
Maybe you started in the Free Edition, entered one 1099, and suddenly got asked to upgrade. Or you finished your federal return and found a state fee you didn't expect. Happens to a lot of people.
So let's break down what every TurboTax plan actually costs this season, who each one is for, and where the extra charges come from. By the end, you'll know which plan fits your return and how to avoid paying for one you don't need.
Quick note on the year: the prices below are for the 2026 filing season, which covers your 2025 tax return. Intuit usually sets final pricing for the next version when it launches, which is expected around late October to early November 2026. We'll update this post when those numbers come out. TurboTax 2026 Prices at a Glance
Here's the short version before we get into details:
| Plan | Federal (list price) | State | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Edition | $0 | $0 | Simple W-2 returns |
| Do It Yourself Deluxe | $79 | ~$39+ per state | Homeowners, itemizers |
| Do It Yourself Premium | $139 | ~$39+ per state | Investors, freelancers, landlords |
| Expert Assist | $89 to $209 | $49 to $59 | DIY with a pro on call |
| Expert Full Service | From ~$129 | Varies | Hand it all off |
DIY Deluxe lists at $79 federal plus $39 state, Premium at $139 plus $39, and Expert Assist runs from $89 up to $209 federal with state fees between $49 and $59. Across all plans, federal prices usually land between $0 and $209, and state returns between $0 and $69 each. FinancerForbes
One more thing. TurboTax pricing moves around a lot during the season. Discounts are common early on, and the company itself describes its pricing as dynamic. So if you're filing in January, you'll probably see lower numbers than someone filing in April. CNBC
TurboTax Free Edition: $0 (But Read the Fine Print)
Free really does mean free here. Federal, state and e-file all cost nothing. The catch is who qualifies.
The Free Edition only works for simple Form 1040 returns, with no extra forms or schedules except those needed for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, student loan interest and Schedule 1-A. Intuit says about 37% of taxpayers fit that description. TurboTaxToolradar
So who's that? Mostly W-2 employees taking the standard deduction. If you have freelance income, rental income, stock sales or want to itemize, you'll get bumped to a paid plan.
That 37% number is worth comparing, by the way. Around 52% of filers typically qualify for H&R Block's free option. If you're on the edge, it's worth reading our TurboTax vs H&R Block 2026 breakdown before you commit. Forbes
Not sure if you qualify? We've covered that in detail in Is TurboTax Free in 2026? What You Actually Pay.
Do It Yourself Deluxe: $79 + State
Deluxe is the plan most people end up on. Reviewers note that most TurboTax users land on Deluxe. Financer
What you're paying for is deductions. Deluxe scans for more than 350 deductions and credits you might qualify for. That matters if you: TurboTax
- Own a home and pay mortgage interest or property taxes
- Have big medical bills
- Made sizable charitable donations
- Want to itemize instead of taking the standard deduction
If none of that applies, Deluxe probably won't find you much extra money. Stick with Free.
Do It Yourself Premium: $139 + State
Premium is where things get more complex. It merges what used to be two separate plans, Premier and Self-Employed. Verito
It handles self-employment and rental property income, plus stocks, bonds, ESPPs, crypto and other investments. It can also import up to 1,500 transactions from over 300 financial institutions and handle 2,000+ crypto transactions. TurboTaxFinancer
So if you drive for Uber, freelance on the side, sold some stock, or rent out a property, this is your plan. Freelancers especially should check our guide on TurboTax 2026 for Freelancers: Deductions Most People Miss, because the $139 only pays off if you actually claim everything you're owed.
Torn between the two paid DIY plans? Here's a detailed TurboTax Deluxe vs Premium 2026 comparison.
Expert Assist: $89 to $209 + State
This is the middle ground. You still do your own taxes, but you can ping a tax pro whenever you get stuck.
Expert Assist includes unlimited help and a final review of your return before it's filed. The price depends on which DIY tier sits underneath it, so Expert Assist on a Premium-level return costs a lot more than on a basic one. CNBC
Is it worth it? Honestly, for a first-time freelancer or someone who just sold a house, probably yes. For a simple W-2 return, probably not. We dig into this more in TurboTax Live 2026: Is Expert Help Worth the Extra Cost?
Expert Full Service: Starting Around $129
You upload your documents, a tax expert does everything, and they review it with you before filing.
Forbes reported Full Service starting at $129 as of April 2026, compared with an average starting cost of about $220 for a CPA. But that's a starting price. The base covers one federal return with one W-2 and one Form 1040, so anything beyond that pushes the cost up. You do get a price estimate before the expert starts working. What About TurboTax Desktop?
Some people still prefer the download version, and it can actually be cheaper for certain returns.
Based on current desktop prices, expect roughly $76 for Deluxe, $117 for Premier, $141 for Home & Business and $186 for Business. Deluxe, Premier and Home & Business include federal plus one state download. SoftwarediscountusaSoftwarediscountusa
That included state download is the big difference. Online, you pay for state separately. On desktop, one state is already bundled in. If you file for a spouse or family member too, desktop can work out cheaper.
The Hidden Costs Nobody Warns You About
This is where most people get surprised.
State filing fees. Every paid online plan charges extra per state. Moved mid-year or work in one state and live in another? You'll pay twice. Depending on where you live, you might be able to file your state return for free directly on your state's tax website instead. Groupon
Paying from your refund. Sounds convenient, but choosing to have TurboTax fees taken out of your refund adds a separate refund processing fee. If you can pay by card, do that. Groupon
Upsells during filing. Aggressive upselling and surprise price increases at checkout are among the most common complaints about TurboTax. You'll see offers for audit protection, expert help and bundles. Skip anything you didn't plan to buy. Financer
Upgrading mid-return. Enter one form the Free Edition doesn't support, and you'll be prompted to upgrade. That's legit if you really need it, but double-check before you click.
How to Pay Less for TurboTax in 2026
A few simple things actually work:
- File early. Discounts are strongest at the start of the season and shrink as April gets closer.
- Start in the mobile app. Last season, starting your return in the TurboTax or Credit Karma app by late February let eligible filers file for free. Watch for a similar offer this time. TurboTax
- Don't overbuy. Start with the lowest plan and let TurboTax upgrade you only if your forms require it.
- File state separately if your state offers free e-filing.
- Look for legit promo codes. We keep an updated list in TurboTax Promo Codes 2026: Legit Ways to Pay Less.
And if price is your biggest concern, compare before you start. Cheaper tools exist, and we've put one head-to-head in TurboTax vs FreeTaxUSA 2026.
So Which TurboTax Plan Should You Pick?
Keep it simple:
- W-2 only, standard deduction: Free Edition
- Homeowner or itemizing: Deluxe
- Freelancer, investor, landlord or crypto trader: Premium
- Want a pro to check your work: Expert Assist
- Don't want to touch it at all: Expert Full Service
Once you've picked, our step-by-step guide to filing taxes with TurboTax 2026 walks you through the whole process. And after you file, you can track your TurboTax refund status here.
FAQs
How much does TurboTax cost in 2026?
It ranges from $0 for the Free Edition to $139 for DIY Premium federal. Expert Assist goes up to around $209 federal, and state returns usually cost extra on paid plans.
Is TurboTax Free Edition really free?
Yes, federal and state are both $0 if your return is simple. You need a basic Form 1040 with limited credits like the EITC or Child Tax Credit. Most returns with side income or itemized deductions won't qualify.
Why is TurboTax charging me more than the advertised price?
Usually it's one of three things: a state filing fee, an upgrade triggered by a form your plan doesn't support, or add-ons like audit protection. Paying from your refund also adds a processing fee.
Is TurboTax Deluxe worth it?
Only if you'll itemize or claim deductions the Free Edition doesn't support, like mortgage interest or big charitable donations. Otherwise, you're paying for features you won't use.
What's the difference between TurboTax Deluxe and Premium?
Deluxe covers deductions and credits for homeowners and itemizers. Premium adds support for self-employment, rental income, stocks and crypto.
Is TurboTax cheaper than H&R Block?
Usually not. H&R Block is generally the cheaper option on paid tiers, and more people qualify for its free version. TurboTax tends to win on ease of use.
Is TurboTax Desktop cheaper than Online?
It can be, since Desktop Deluxe, Premier and Home & Business include one state download. Online charges for state separately.
When will TurboTax 2026 prices for next season be released?
Intuit usually confirms new pricing when the new version launches, typically late October to early November.
