Strings, Arrays, and HashMaps: The Three Topics Behind Most Java Screening Rounds

Early interview rounds for Java roles lean on three topics again and again: strings, arrays, and hash maps. They are cheap to test, they appear in daily work, and they reveal whether a candidate really knows the standard library. Focused practice on these three can cover a lot of ground.

Strings

Strings in Java are immutable, which surprises beginners. Every change makes a new object, so building a long string in a loop calls for a builder. Interviewers like asking about this, and a short, correct explanation earns easy credit.

Arrays

Arrays have a fixed size, and many tasks ask you to scan, count, or rearrange them. Think about index boundaries, empty arrays, and arrays with one item. Off-by-one errors are the classic way to lose points.

Hash Maps

A map from keys to values turns many slow solutions into fast ones. Counting duplicates is the textbook example, since you can count each item as you pass over the data once. Know how to loop over entries and what happens when a key is missing.

One List That Covers All Three

A user-made Codewars list of Java interview questions describes itself as common questions about strings, arrays, and hash maps. It holds twenty kata, including Counting Duplicates and Calculate String Rotation at 6 kyu, and So Many Permutations at 4 kyu, so the range runs from warm-up to a real challenge.

A Study Order That Works

  • Warm up with the 8 kyu tasks to get the syntax back in your fingers
  • Do the 7 kyu string tasks next
  • Move to the 6 kyu tasks that need a map
  • Leave the permutation task for the end
  • Revisit anything you could not explain out loud

Questions Interviewers Add

After a coding task, expect follow-ups such as why you chose a map over a list, what the time cost is, and what would change if the input were huge. Prepare short answers for each of these.

Know the Standard Tools

Be comfortable with the common collection classes and with string methods. Searching the documentation during practice is fine, but in an interview you will want the common ones in your head.

Write Readable Code

Good names and small methods make a solution easier to discuss. A clear but slightly longer answer often impresses more than a compressed one nobody can follow.

Practice With a Friend

Do a mock interview with a friend, or record yourself solving a task aloud. Hearing your own explanation exposes gaps that silent practice hides. Two or three mock sessions before the real interview make a visible difference.
