Mammography Technologists in California: Planning the Mammography-Specific Hours
Mammographers in California face two layers of continuing education. There is the general renewal total, and within it a set number of hours that must cover mammography itself. Planning for both at the start of a cycle prevents a scramble near the end.
The California Rule as Summarized
Get Your CEU, an online CE provider, summarizes the California mammography requirement as 24 hours in two years, with 10 of those hours in mammography. Check the current wording on the California Department of Public Health guidelines, which the provider links to from its California page.
The Federal Layer
Mammographers also work under MQSA. The same provider's FAQ lists MQSA continuing education as 15 CEUs in 36 months. Because the cycles differ, a course may fall inside one window and outside the other, so track the dates for each.
Courses That Serve Both
Some courses carry acceptance for both ARRT and MQSA. The provider lists Mammography Basics as a 24 Category A credit course that includes 4 digital hours and notes MQSA and ARRT acceptance. It also lists Diagnostic Breast Imaging at 28.5 credits with 4 digital hours.
Building a Two-Year Plan
- Write down your California renewal date and your MQSA window
- Choose at least one mammography-focused course early
- Add digital radiography hours if your certificate requires them
- Fill the remaining hours with topics you find useful
Keep Topic Hours Visible
Save each certificate together with the course description that shows how the hours divide between mammography, digital, and general topics. If a renewal reviewer asks, you can show the breakdown immediately.
Choose Courses You Will Use
Mammography changes with new equipment and screening guidance. When choosing California CE credits, a course on breast imaging techniques or pathology can improve the work you do every day.
Do Not Leave It Late
Mammography-specific courses are fewer than general ones. Starting early gives you a real choice instead of whatever is left in the final month.
When You Change Employers
Mammographers who move between facilities sometimes lose track of which courses were paid for or recorded by a former employer. Keep your own copies of every certificate, not only the ones held by the facility. Your continuing education belongs to you, and a personal file makes any move simpler. It also helps when a facility inspection asks for proof of your MQSA training, since you can produce it without waiting on a former workplace to search its records.
With both rules mapped out at the start, California mammographers can renew without surprises and learn something useful along the way.
