A Maintenance Manager's Notes on Replacing Corroded Duct Flanges

The call usually comes on a Monday. A line is down, an exhaust duct has started to drip, and someone has found rust bleeding from a flange joint. The repair is routine, but the way you handle it decides whether you do it again in two years.

Find Out Why It Failed

Before ordering parts, look at the pattern. Rust near the bottom of a joint often means moisture is collecting. Rust all around suggests the air itself is the cause. Staining near bolt holes points to fasteners or gasket leaks. The pattern tells you whether the old material was simply the wrong choice.

Check the Neighbors

If one joint has failed, others of the same age are probably close behind. Walk the run and look at every joint you can reach. Fixing three at once in a planned shutdown is far cheaper than three emergency calls.

Choose a Better Material

If the original ring was plated or painted and the space is wet or corrosive, stepping up the material is usually the real fix. Hot dip galvanized suits damp places. Stainless steel suits washdown, chemical air, and spots where nobody wants to return in a few years.

Match the Hardware

Upgrade the bolts, nuts, and gasket along with the ring. A new stainless ring held by rusty bolts defeats the point, and a gasket that has hardened will leak whatever else you replace.

A Quick Job Checklist

  • Record the duct diameter and bolt center
  • Photograph the old joint before cutting it out
  • Count the holes and measure their size
  • Order spare gaskets and fasteners
  • Plan the shutdown window with operations

Where to Source the Parts

Maintenance teams searching for Stainless Steel Angle Rings can check the Haltom Industries angle ring page. It says stainless steel is one of the stocked materials, along with mild steel, zinc plated, and hot dip galvanized, and that rings can be stamped or rolled to any specification.

Keep a Record

Write down what you replaced, the date, and what you chose. When the next person opens that duct, the notes will tell them what is inside and why it was done.

Talk to Operations

Tell the people who run the line what you found and what you plan to change. They know which areas get washed down, which fans run hot, and which spaces are hardest to reach, and that knowledge improves the plan.

Plan the Follow-Up

Add the joints to your routine inspection list. A quick look every few months costs nothing compared with another emergency shutdown. Haltom Industries answers questions at 817-770-0811.
