Protecting Your Asphalt Driveway Through Winter

Winter is the toughest season for asphalt driveways. Water seeps into cracks, freezes and expands, prying the pavement apart. Snowploughs and shovels scrape the surface, and de-icing salts speed up deterioration. A little preparation in autumn and smart habits through the cold months can prevent spring surprises.

Before the First Freeze

  • Fill cracks so water cannot reach the base.
  • Repair potholes and sunken areas while asphalt plants are still producing hot mix.
  • Clean drains and point downspouts away from the driveway.
  • Mark driveway edges with stakes for snow removal.

Why Sealcoat Helps in Winter

A sealcoat applied during the warm season acts as a barrier against water and salt. Driveways that go into winter freshly sealed generally come out in better shape than bare, oxidised asphalt.

Snow Removal Without Damage

Use plastic-edged shovels or set plough blades slightly above the surface. Avoid metal ice choppers, which gouge asphalt, and clear snow promptly so meltwater does not sit on the surface and refreeze.

Go Easy on De-Icers

Some de-icing products are harsher on pavement and nearby concrete than others. Use the minimum needed, consider sand for traction and sweep away residue once temperatures rise.

The Garage Apron

Where asphalt meets the garage slab, freeze-thaw movement can cause sinking and holes that reach the foundation. If you see deep holes along that edge, plan a proper hot asphalt apron repair rather than filling them with cold patch.

Parking and Heavy Loads

Cold asphalt is more brittle, and warm asphalt is softer. In winter, avoid dragging heavy items such as snow blowers with metal skids across the surface. In late spring and summer, avoid parking trailers, campers or dumpsters in one spot for long periods, which can leave depressions. Spread heavy loads on boards where possible and move vehicles occasionally.

Spring Check-Up

When the snow melts, inspect for new cracks, potholes and areas where water pools. Address them early in the season, then reseal if the surface looks grey and worn.

Professional Help

The maintenance of asphalt driveways through harsh winters is easier with a contractor who knows local conditions. Jet-Black has locally owned locations in 21 states, including cold-climate regions from Colorado to northern Minnesota and New England. Since 1987 it has completed more than 500,000 jobs using an industrial-grade sealer and hot rubber crackfiller, and many locations offer hot asphalt repairs including sunken apron replacement.

A few simple steps each autumn and spring can add years to your driveway's life.
