Is Bear Mountain State Park Worth Visiting? A Visitor's Guide

Yes, Bear Mountain State Park is well worth visiting if you enjoy mountain scenery, hiking, family-friendly attractions, or an easy nature escape from the New York City area. With Hudson River views, varied trails, seasonal recreation, and plenty to do beyond hiking, it offers something for almost every type of visitor.

Why Bear Mountain State Park Is Worth the Trip

The scenery is one of the strongest reasons to visit Bear Mountain State Park. The park sits among rugged mountains on the west side of the Hudson River, creating a landscape of wooded hills, rocky viewpoints, lakes, and sweeping views across the Hudson Highlands.

One of the highlights is Perkins Memorial Tower at the summit of Bear Mountain. Sitting about 1,305 feet above the Hudson River, the tower provides impressive views across the park, Harriman State Park, and the surrounding Highlands. Perkins Memorial Drive and the tower are generally accessible from April through November 30, weather permitting.

Hiking is another major draw. The park includes sections of the Appalachian Trail and Long Path, alongside other routes that range from relaxed walks to steep, rocky climbs. That variety means you can choose a route that matches your experience instead of committing to an exhausting mountain trek just to enjoy the scenery.

There Is More to Do Than Hike

You do not need to be an enthusiastic hiker to enjoy Bear Mountain State Park. The park offers picnic areas, fishing access, a large playfield, playgrounds, biking, boat rentals, and the Trailside Museums and Zoo.

The Trailside Museums and Zoo can be especially appealing for families. It focuses on local wildlife and natural history, and there is currently no required admission charge, although a $1-per-person donation is suggested.

During summer, the park also operates a swimming pool. The 2026 swimming season runs through September 7, with a separate $5 admission charge. If you visit during colder months, the experience changes completely: an outdoor ice rink operates seasonally, and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are among the winter activities available.

There is even a Bear Mountain Merry-Go-Round featuring hand-painted park scenes and seats carved into native animals such as bears, deer, foxes, and wild turkeys. It is a small detail, but one that helps make the park work particularly well for a mixed-age family day.

How Much Time Should You Spend There?

For a first visit to Bear Mountain State Park, allow at least half a day. That gives you time for a moderate walk, some sightseeing, a picnic, and perhaps a visit to the Trailside Museums and Zoo without turning the trip into a race between attractions.

A full day makes more sense if hiking is a priority. You could spend the morning on a trail, have lunch near the park's main recreational areas, and then explore another attraction or viewpoint during the afternoon.

You can also make the visit an overnight getaway. Bear Mountain Inn is located within the park, with additional accommodation available at Overlook Lodge and the Stone Lodges.

The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk. A vehicle-use fee of $10 per car is currently collected during designated hours, although individual activities such as the pool may carry additional charges.

What Should You Know Before Visiting?

Check the official park conditions before setting out, particularly when hiking. Current construction near Bear Mountain Inn is causing detours on portions of the Appalachian, Suffern-Bear Mountain, and Major Welch trails, with work expected to affect routes through summer 2027. Other trail closures may also remain in effect.

Season also makes a big difference. Spring and summer are excellent for hiking and outdoor activities, while fall transforms the forests around Bear Mountain into a colorful Hudson Valley landscape. Winter offers a quieter experience with ice skating and cold-weather recreation.

Dogs are permitted in some areas but must stay on a leash no longer than six feet. They are not allowed in buildings, picnic areas, bathing areas, walkways, or the Trailside Museums and Wildlife Center, so pet owners should plan their route carefully.

Is Bear Mountain State Park Worth Visiting?

For most outdoor travelers, the answer is yes. Bear Mountain State Park combines hiking, Hudson River scenery, family attractions, seasonal activities, and mountain viewpoints within one destination, making it easy to build anything from a relaxed half-day visit to a full weekend escape.

Check current trail and facility conditions before you travel, choose activities that match your pace, and leave enough time to enjoy the landscape without rushing.
