Finding a soft lump beneath the skin can raise questions about its cause and the best way to manage it. Lipomas are common, usually noncancerous growths made up of fat cells. They often develop beneath the skin on areas such as the arms, shoulders, back, neck, and thighs. Although many lipomas do not cause discomfort, people may look for treatment options that avoid an operation.
